The Crystal World was published in 1966 and forms part of a post-apocalyptic triptych that also includes The Drowned World and The Drought by famed British author J.G. Ballard.
The Crystal World takes place largely in a jungle undergoing a mysterious crystalization, where time seems to slow to a halt, and petrified animals lurk throughout the undergrowth while insanity slowly envelops those who refuse to leave.
The fragmented image speaks to the mysterious sense of gloom and despair of the story and reflects the lack of clarity of mind in the protagonist.
